Hershey came to OHF after he fractured his orbital bone and the eye abscessed. He spent 10 days in the Bend Equine ICU being stabilized, and was discharged with a support protocol including:
Medications rectally administered every 2 hours from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Ocular antibiotics administered via lines surgically inserted, requiring careful management
High level of monitoring
We focused his attention with hand walking and other distraction methods to avoid him rubbing and dislodging the sutures and interventions. His barn chose to refer him out to the OHF team to provide around-the-clock support at a far lower cost than staying in the ICU.
The ability for Hershey's owner to be able to visit and (when appropriate) hand walk or groom and bond with him while recovering will help shorten the time it takes to get back into the saddle.
We hope to continue providing support and recovery services similar to Hershey to the great Central Oregon Community!
